Here We Go Again

Due to the length of this post, Brian told me I needed to start with "start reading at your own risk." So sorry in advance about the length. Yesterday Brian had his 17th surgery. He had another tumor that had grown in the same area of his pelvis where the cluster of 50-60 had been removed in February. Considering all of the microscopic cells that could have gotten away, we consider one pretty miraculous. Of course, none would have been better, but at least it wasn't as bad as several. They found the tumor during routine scans back in October. At first the doctor was hesitant to operate so soon and in the same year of his last major surgery, but after factoring in several positives to operating before the year's end(insurance, possible sloughing off of more tumors, associated nerve pain, golf game, etc.) we decided to proceed in December.
They made the initial incision at 8:20am. The estimated time for the duration of surgery was 4 hours and for possibly the first time ever, Brian was out of surgery and we(Brian's mom and I) were speaking with the doctor at right about 4 hours. He made us nervous by starting out with "It gets harder every time." Things went pretty well though. They went in through his previous scar in the front to access the tumor. Once they pulled back the mesh lining in his abdominals, they proceeded to find the best route to take out the tumor. It was wedged in the notch of his right pelvis and was pressed up against the sciatic nerve, which explains the pain in his leg and numbing of his foot Brian had been experiencing. They were able to get out about 3/4ths of the tumor in one piece, but a few nodules had appeared bulging around the main mass which was about the size of 3 golf balls placed together in an arch(everything is in golf terms for Brian's sake) and had to break it apart to get everything out. To get the remaining pieces, they had to go around a different route and push it up through. They really tried to get it all out in one piece, but it was just too risky, in fact they had to repair one hole already, and didn't want to cause any damage. We fully trust Dr. Scott(orthepedic surgeon) and Dr. Chick(plastic surgeon) and their judgement. We can't stress enough how fortunate we consider ourselves to be to have the two of them working on Brian. We feel they are the absolute best surgeons for the job. Although we wish they could have gotten everything out in one piece, they were thorough in getting out anything they could feel or see. We just pray there were not any microscopic seeds of cancer that spread and could turn into future tumors.
They were going to try to remove the screw that had been placed in his hip in February for extra support, but they would have had to go through the bladder and cause significant damage, so they decided it wasn't necessary. Brian won't notice the difference, it just would have helped with his MRI scans. They put the mesh back down and closed him up around noon.
Fortunately, so far Brian seems to have all feeling still. His quad muscles are a bit week, but still functioning. He is experiencing quite a bit of nerve pain, but with the morphine pump, he is managing pretty well. The recovery is already going much quicker than February. He is tired, but his spirits are up. He got up this morning, but his heart rate reached 150 just walking to the door, so the PT wouldn't let him go any further. He tends to have that problem quite often. It always makes the nurses nervous, but we just know from experience that his heart rate is high after surgery. He just got up and sat at the edge of the bed for about a half hour and is really doing well. We are so grateful for all of the prayers in our behalf. I'm sure if we could see all that is being done for him, we would see miracles.
So far the routine is, I come during the day and Marilyn(his mom) takes over at night. The kids are with my parents during the day and my Dad is running Lucas to school. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive family. They are as good as they come.
Our sweet Henry is having some of his own trials right now. He has something called Legg, Calve, Perthes Disease. Lucas and Henry both have the same bone disease as Brian, but this is unrelated. The ball joint in his right hip didn't receive the blood supply it needed while developing, so it will break apart, be absorbed and rebuild on it's own. He is probably in the rebuilding stage right now and he is experiencing a lot of pain. He won't put any pressure on his right leg and it especially hurts at night. He has a hard time sleeping and wakes crying in pain. We are in the process of finding out if there is anything else going on because his behavior isn't typical for this disease. We are finding him a walker and he has an appointment for a second opinion an MRI and bloodwork next week. He is a trooper, but it's been really hard to see him crawling around and in so much pain. Hopefully we can have everyone back home and comfortable for Christmas.
Life is hard, but we have so many blessings to enjoy as well. Without the sorrow, there is no joy.
I've thought several times about where I would be if we didn't have the gospel in our lives through our trials. I can't comprehend how difficult it would be. Fortunately, we do have the knowledge that everything we endure is our Heavenly Father's will, and His will is greater than our own. It can be easy to forget at times, but deep down I always know that is true. I must say we are all praying His will is to make this the last surgery for Brian and he can be cancer free, but come what may and love it, right? Easier said than done, but perhaps if I say it enough it will stick.

Henry Surfing for the First Time

When I asked him if he wanted to surf, I didn't expect him to say yes.

Henry turned 3!

Henry has had many hurdles the past few months, one of them being his 3rd birthday. We had a blast celebrating together. I think Lucas was more excited than Henry. He woke him up around 6 in the morning. When I went with Lucas to pick out a present for Henry, he told me "I'm going to get him the best present! When he opens it his face is going to turn red!" It was pretty cute. Henry definitely had a great day too, though.

We started out early(thanks to Lucas) with presents.

We celebrated in the evening at Boondocks with a little mini golf and games; and finished off with a little Buzz cake and ice cream. The only birthday parties we had been to recently were 1st birthdays, so when we brought the cake out, Henry started digging in with his hands thinking that was the appropriate course of action. We got a pretty good kick out of that.
Henry displaying his new golf hat with Daddy and Bubba. Nat and Bubba hit a home run on this gift! Another feat Henry has managed is potty training! Typical Henry, it had to be on his terms, but when he was ready it was a breeze! As a reward, we told him he would get to go golfing when he was potty trained. We were on a family vacation at Bear Lake when Brian woke Henry up to go golfing and he ran around the condo telling everyone "I get to go golfing now because I'm a potty train!" He's such a sweet kid and we love him to bits!

Just another photo

Couldn't help but post this one from the cabin. This girl is going to have a bazillion pictures before she can even walk.

Lucas turns 5!

First can I just say, holy smokes I have a five year old! Crazy! Here are a few pics from Lucas' "Cars" birthday party.
We decided to go with a pinata this year. I don't think this one was intended for 5 years olds. Brian finally stepped in and attacked it, but here are some heartfelt attempts.

Lucas and his "Dinoco McQueen" cake. He had a blast with a few close buddies, and as usual was spoiled by grandparents all around.

Easter Haul

Easter was hoppin' at the Bitner house(pardon the pun).

The Easter Bunny seemed to like the carrots and celery. Did you know he likes ranch? Well he does.
That sneaky bunny left his prints again.

Henry sporting his new "jeeser."

Lucas reading Daddy his new "Rio" book. The Easter Bunny, as well as a few grandmas, left us some wonderful goodies and enough candy to last until Halloween!

Janie's Blessing

What a beautiful day. Beautiful blessing, beautiful food, beautiful baby(I can say that right?). Our sweet Janie was perfect for her blessing. She just gazed up in silence as Brian gave the blessing. I'm so grateful Brian was able to bless her. It was so wonderful and a moment I will always cherish.

Yummmmm...

I could just eat her up! Lucas came up to me and handed me a dollar while I was taking these. When I asked him what it was for, he sweetly said, "To buy Janie a new sweater."

Valentine's Cookies

Every Valentine's day Essie makes us all big cookies. Here are some pics of the boys devouring theirs. Yes they are still in their pjs and eating cookies. The fun starts early at Grandma's.

Surgery 16

Wednesday, Brian hit #16 for his surgery count to date. He went about it in typical Brian fashion.

They made the initial incision through his previous scar at about 8:40. He had three surgeons working on him- Dr. Scott(orthopedic surgeon), Dr. Chick(plastic surgeon), and Dr. Hopkins(urologist). The removed the tumor by the bladder first. It was pressing up against the bladder and they were worried about it invading, so they had to take a piece of the bladder along with the tumor. Because of that, Brian will have a catheter for 2 weeks. The catheter is probably what Brian hates most about surgery, so he isn’t too thrilled about this, but they are concerned about infection and bladder spillage so the catheter is necessary. Had they not taken that piece and the cancer were to invade his bladder, they would have needed to remove it completely, but they feel confident that the margins were clear. They also removed a small mole on his thigh that looked concerning. Unrelated to the surgery, but they happened to find it, so they removed it and will send it to pathology.

Next they started on the second and largest tumor that was located around all of his nerves that we were concerned about. These are the nerves that were agitated last time and caused him to lose his quad muscle function for about 7 months. After removing the biggest part of the tumor they found another smaller one attached behind it. After taking it out they were very surprised to find 50-60 small tumors that they removed. They removed the ones they could see along with many that they could feel. They hadn’t shown up on the scans because they were so small. They ranged in size from about a grain of rice to the end of a pinkie finger. The doctor said we have to assume that they grew from the biggest tumor and fell off. The biggest concern is that there were microscopic cancer cells that fell from the tumor that were too small to be seen or even felt. Brian is pretty discouraged about this news, but we are fortunate to have the doctors we do and if any two surgeons were to find them all it would be the two working on Brian(Dr. Scott and Dr. Chick). They will just have to keep an eye on that area through scans to see if any more show up.

He had to chisel away the tumor on his hip and cut down through the bone which needed to have a screw placed through the bone to hold it together. He will need to be on crutches longer so that he doesn't have weight bearing on that hip. Dr. Chick then repaired the hernia.

Some of the mesh had come undone from the last repair so he fixed that and is hopeful that it won't pull apart again. They then turned him over and removed the tumor on the back side. That tumor was a little smaller than a golf ball and they were able to take it all.

The first couple days out of surgery have been a little rough. He has been running a fever off and on and feeling pretty lousy. Dr. Scott is not concerned about infection because he says it would be too early for that. He thinks it is because Brian wasn’t able to get up at all the first day. He's been on Tylenol to try to get the fever down. His blood count was a bit low so they gave him a couple pints the first evening. The physical therapist has been by a couple times and we are all impressed with how well Brian is moving around.

The miraculous part of it all is that he doesn’t seem to have hardly any nerve damage. We were really concerned about this since they were working in that area for several hours getting all of the tumors out, and the last surgery left him with no feeling and loss of muscle function for several months. He is really quite blessed in that way.

We truly appreciate all of the support and prayers and feel very blessed to have such a wonderful support system.

Welcome Janie Grace!

born: January 20
weight: 6 lbs. 11 oz.

It's a bit insane to think we now have 3 kids, but we are all SO in love with our new little addition, Janie Grace(named after my Aunt Jane and Grandma). I couldn't ask for a better little girl. I often have to wake her to feed her! Knock on wood, but so far she's an absolute doll and I'm having a hayday taking ridiculous amounts of pictures and dressing her in bows and frilly outfits.
The boys just can't get enough of her. They ask to hold her all the time and Lucas tells me several times every day, "she's just so cute!"
We had our first photo shoot, so I had to post at least one pic.

ok, two.

Welcome Sloane!

In November, Brett and Lindsey welcomed their first little baby girl Sloane Isabelle Preston. She is such a doll and even sleeps 10 hours each night!! We were able to attend her beautiful baby blessing by her father on Sunday. We're so excited to have her as the first Bitner grandbaby girl!

Christmas of the Century

This last Christmas turned out to be the year of spoiling Emily. I'm still shocked at the incredible gifts I received from my family.

First off, with a little begging, Brian let me combine Christmas, baby and a little savings of my own to purchase a new lens I have been oggling over for a while. I really wanted to have it before the baby comes and it has already gotten PLENTY of good use(see above post).

My parents gave me the surprise of the century when they showed up with the most incredible sewing machine I have ever seen. This thing practically does all the work for me! It even embroiders. They knew I wanted to get some projects done before the baby comes, so I got it a little early and had to keep the secret from my sister and sister-in-law(also receiving the machine). I've been having a hayday sewing anything I can think of for the baby. I'm certainly no pro(I spend half my time unpicking), but I'm learning and constantly looking for new projects I can make, or things I can embroider the boys names on. It's too bad I don't know our little girl's name yet or it would probably be on just about everything as well.

The last big surprise came from Brian's parents on Christmas morning. We all received a card which we opened at the same time letting us know we were all going to Disneyland in a couple months! We've been fortunate enough to go the past two years and I can honestly not get enough of that place. I absolutely LOVE it and I can't wait to go with the whole Bitner clan. In my opinion, it truly is "the happiest place on earth!"

The boys were of course spoiled as usual. I think they are still on toy overload. There is only so much control I can have over their 6 sets of grandparents(all of which are married to their original spouses).

Brian didn't do so bad himself, with his favorite purchase being his new droid X.

We feel so blessed and I'm just overwhelmed with graditude for the generous family members we have.
